It’s rare to see a startup accelerator break the mold, but Code Coven’s Aurora program has done just that. Designed specifically for UK game studios led by underrepresented founders, Aurora promises more than a token nod to diversity—it offers real dealflow, mentorship and legal backing from day one.
What Makes Aurora Stand Out
Multi-disciplinary support from finance, legal, HR and venture capital experts
Hands-on mentoring, seed funding and in-house legal advice—no checkbox exercises
Backed by Code Coven, a pioneer in accelerating underrepresented gaming talent
Partnerships with Shred Capital, Lee & Thompson and Bia Innovate open doors to global markets
Program Details and Selection
The next Aurora cohort kicks off in Q4 2025. Applications open in Q1 2025 and close by Q2, with rolling reviews to admit just six UK-based studios. Key criteria include a working game concept and at least 50% of leadership from underrepresented backgrounds. Funded by the BFI and National Lottery, the six-month program ends with a showcase day for investors and publishers.

Expert Voices
“Aurora isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about building an ecosystem that should have existed years ago,” says Tara Mustapha, CEO of Code Coven. “We want studios to be taken seriously from day one.”
“We’ve long struggled to find advisors who grasp indie realities,” adds Emeka Okafor, co-founder of Prism Pixel. “Aurora’s legal and financial modules are exactly what our team needs.”
Possible Hurdles
Despite its promise, Aurora faces a few challenges. With only six slots, competition will be fierce and many quality studios risk missing out. The reliance on public funding might limit future cohorts if BFI or National Lottery priorities shift. And the program’s pace—covering everything from HR recruitment to deal negotiation in six months—could overwhelm teams new to the business side of games.
Looking Ahead
If Aurora delivers on its bold vision, the UK games scene could see a wave of new voices and fresh AAA-level experiences rooted in diverse perspectives. But success hinges on sustained support beyond the initial program and tracking long-term outcomes. For now, Aurora is a welcome disruptor—and one to watch closely.
